Now that our first goal is nearing completion, we
are ready to start the next phase. The idea is to create
a "commemorative" quilt honoring Arizoans with PD that
will become a permanent display to raise awareness of
the extent of PD and it's effects. We are hoping to
involve as many PWPs as possible. The design currently
under consideration would have spaces for 250 photo
squares accented by the tulip square in reds, golds, and
green.
We have also
branched out to other parts of the country. A Wyoming
Support Group is plaaning a raffle anf fair with a quilt
they are making. A quilter from New York state is
making a quilt for her sister-in-law with PD. The
Midwest Chapter of APDA raffled a Patchworks quilt thid
spring and raised almost $500. for patieent services.
In addition to
our quilts at a recent AZ-APDA conference we raised over
$1000. selling our tulip T-shirts.

We moved to Williams, AZ from
Jarrettsville, MD in May of 2003 for our “retirement” and a new lifestyle. Within 9 months after the
move, I was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease, and life changed
in many ways. Just not
quite the ways we had anticipated.
Quilting
was something I enjoyed and planned to have more time for in retirement. Well, I have
more time, but as PWPs know it isn’t always “on” time. I have lots of quilts planned,
probably more than I will ever finish. As quilters know there are
“toppers” and that is what I really like to do. I wanted to use my
love of quilts and designing to bring attention to PD and its
effects on our lives, and to help other PWPs. I was actually working
on a traditional pieced tulip design when I saw Karen’s tulip on the
PDPlan 4 Life site.
Jean challenged
me to create a quilt using it., and this is the one I decided to do
first. (Actually design #3)
The top is
finished, nearly quilted, and we are raffling it off to
promote PD awareness and raise funds for a project that will help
PWPs with limited resources get needed treatments.
If you have
any suggestions I’d love to hear from you. If you are a quilter and would like to
get involved in our “Patchworks for Parkinson’s “ Project, please
contact us. We’d love to see this project bloom and benefit PWPs
everywhere.
